The Road to Jodhpur departs

We boarded the roomy, fully-equipped tempo traveller in Delhi to begin our tour. The countryside of Rajasthan was a visual joy, with huge stretches of golden sand, small towns, and sporadic sightings of wildlife. Excitement increased with each mile travelled as we travelled the winding roads.

Jodhpur

Jodhpur is reached; the Blue City beckons

We arrived in Jodhpur after several hours of travel when the imposing Mehrangarh Fort came into view. The massive fort, built on a steep hill, provided a magnificent entrance for the city. We were eager to discover the old town’s winding streets, which contained Jodhpur’s true essence.

Exploring the Old Town: A Kaleidoscope of Colors

Wandering through the narrow alleys of the old town, we were instantly captivated by the vibrant blue-painted houses that gave Jodhpur its famous moniker. The indigo hue created a surreal atmosphere, evoking a sense of tranquility amidst the bustling streets. Each corner revealed hidden gems, from ornate havelis adorned with intricate carvings to bustling markets brimming with textiles, handicrafts, and aromatic spices.

Fort Mehrangarh: A Royal Wonder

It is impossible to visit Jodhpur and leave without seeing the beautiful Mehrangarh Fort. As we approached the citadel, we took in the magnificence of its enormous walls and the spectacular panoramas of the city below. The fort’s museum housed a substantial collection of artefacts, royal relics, and historical displays that provided a window into the city’s regal past.

A Gastronomic Journey: Savouring Local Delights

We were enthralled by Jodhpur’s culinary scene and had regional specialties like mawa kachori, mirchi vada, and dal baati churma. A food lover’s heaven, the busy markets and street food vendors offered a vast variety of flavours and spices that titillated our taste buds.

Umaid Bhawan Palace: Opulence Personified

A visit to Jodhpur would not be complete without exploring the opulent Umaid Bhawan Palace. This magnificent palace, part of which is now a luxury hotel, served as the residence of the royal family. We marveled at its architectural splendor, wandered through the lush gardens, and learned about the fascinating history of the palace.

The best time to visit Jodhpur is during the months of October to March, which is the winter season in Rajasthan. During this time, the weather is pleasant with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 25°C (45°F to 77°F), making it ideal for exploring the city’s attractions and enjoying outdoor activities.
