To rejuvenate the mind and body, a weekend gateway to the foothills of the Himalayas is Darjeeling. Brilliantly connected by airways, roadways and railways, Darjeeling hill town is a small, about 10 square kilometres town which has subdivisions like Kalimpong, Kurseong, Siliguri etc. This hill station has been one of the choicest places for the travellers from all across the country.

Within Darjeeling town area, one can find plenty of options for tempo travelling or hiring taxis. Right from the railway station, there are plenty of cabs available taking the visitors up to the hills. They offer both local sightseeing tours along with point-to-point transfers.

Originally set up as a sanatorium or health resort by the British in mid 1800s, Darjeeling hill town is now internationally acclaimed for its tea. Numerous sprawling tea estates are seen as one swirls up the road. Beautifully carved over the steep hills, the tea plantation is a beauty to watch.

The heritage tour in narrow gauge Toy Train is one experience which everyone should try. Riding the Toy Train of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) will give this coveted experience which is difficult to explain to anyone who hasn’t ridden the same. Breathtaking landscapes and grand curves with nerve-fearing gradients, the toy train ride is an example of engineering ingenuity. DHR Toy Train received the World Heritage status and is a premium choice for any family travel. Toy train joy rides operate from Darjeeling Railway Station is a two hour round trip from Darjeeling up to Ghum and back. It covers a total distance of approximately 14kms.

The town centre of Darjeeling is known as Mall or Chowrasta, which is one of the centre points for the tourists.  It is a flat open public square which is a pedestrian only zone and is devoid of vehicular traffic. With plenty of hotels and sharing accommodations available near this area, this is undoubtedly the most crowded are of the town. Therefore, to enjoy the untapped beauty of nature, you have to go a bit interior of the town.

Kanchenjunga Mountain view from the Tiger Hill is a major attraction for the tourists. The sunrise point is a much celebrated tourist spot for the tourists and remains crowded all through the year.  Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) is a pilgrimage for all climbing enthusiasts of the world. This well stocked museum with mountaineering displays is a much visit for trekkers.

Darjeeling Ropeway is an option for the adventure tourists. Located 5km from Darjeeling Town is Batasia Loop which is a spiral of a narrow gauge railway track. Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park are the two other terraced gardens displaying the floral diversity.

Spring, summer and autumn months are the best seasons to visit Darjeeling. With large diversity in origins, there are plenty of festivals celebrated in Darjeeling which showcases the unique customs of the local folks. Local food and beverages of the North-eastern region is a worth trying experience. The plethora of local cafes and restaurants offer some of the best cuisines to enjoy.
